Would you pray for our dear Romanian brothers and sisters? The new president, Traian Basescu, pushes through a new controversial religious law which are the most restrictive in Europe. Joseph K. Grieboski, president of the Washington, DC-based Institute on Religion and Public Policy (IRPP), said that "promulgation of this law by President Basescu is a blatant attack on religious freedom and fundamental rights and demonstrates little if any move away from the previous communist regimes..." This law basically requires any new churches to register and restricts any church multiplication for denominations with less than 20,000 members, 0.1% of the Romania's total population. The Baptist Union of Romania, one of the biggest Romania evangelical demoninations, has less than 20,000 members. Some Christians in Netherlands with Christian Union are concerned that smaller church groups and alliances, including the Baptist Union of Romania, may eventually be banned. My Romanian colleagues, the pastors who have attended our Romanian pastors conferences, have expressed strong concerns that they will no longer be able to plant new churches. Please pray for Romania. Is this window of opportunity slowly closing again? New restrictive laws in Romania violate human rights Romania now has the "worst religion law." Romania new controversial religious law Romania's new president and secretive rush to adopt new religious laws Romania now has the most restrictive religious laws in Europe
