National Day of Mourning for Gerald R. Ford - 01/02/2007
President Gerald R. Ford was distinguished as a US President for several reasons. I will surely not be exhaustive in my list: He was the only US President to NOT be elected Vice President, nor President. He was the most athletic US President. He was the only US President to have been an Eagle Scout. His unconditional pardon of President Richard Nixon in the Watergate scandale was unique. Former US President Gerald R. Ford was the longest surviving US President at age 93. A few quotes from Gerald R. Ford: "The Constitution is the bedrock of all our freedoms; guard and cherish it; keep honor and order in your own house; and the republic will endure." "Our inflation, our public enemy number one, will, unless whipped, destroy our country, our homes, our liberties, our property and finally our national pride as surely as will any well-armed wartime energy." "A government big enough to give you everything you want is a government big enough to take from you everything you have." "It's discouraging how hard it is for a President to slice any large chunks from a $305 billion budget." "I guess it just proves that in America anyone can be President." "I am acutely aware that you have not elected me as your president by your ballots, so I ask you to confirm me with your prayers." "The political lesson of Watergate is this: Never again must America allow an arrogant, elite guard of political adolescents to by-pass the regular party organization and dictate the terms of a national election."
